Bayeux
The Medieval Town
Straddled by the River Aure and situated a few kilometres from the Channel coast, Bayeux is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Normandy. Preserved over the centuries, it captivates visitors with its remarkable heritage, its cobbled streets and the elegance of its architecture.
During your stay at the Château de Sully, do take the time to stroll amongst the half-timbered houses, 18th- and 19th-century townhouses and bustling squares, in the heart of a city where every stroll reveals a piece of Normandy’s history.
The Bayeux Tapestry
Although the town no longer has its original castle, it still retains an exceptional heritage, dominated by its majestic Romanesque and Gothic cathedral. It is also home to one of Normandy’s most famous treasures: the Bayeux Tapestry, which is listed on the register «UNESCO’s »Memory of the World’ programme. Measuring nearly 70 metres in length, this unique work depicts William the Conqueror’s conquest of England.
Bayeux is home to three major museums: the Bayeux Tapestry Museum, the Baron Gérard Museum of Art and History (MAHB) and the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum.
